Trailer Recap from Comic Con 2017

There was more than enough to be hyped about this weekend. Comic Con gave us plenty to look forward to and some of the best trailers a boy could hope for! In case you missed out on all the good times here are a few of the ones that you for sure need to see.

First up is Thor: Ragnarok and this is the one I think that got me the most. This just went from a movie I will check out to an opening night event.

Next up is the Defenders and the gang looks like they will be having another great time in the Big Apple.

Stranger Things season 2 will be picking up right where the first ended and with what we see here it look's like the Demogorgon will be a fond memory after all this.

The Walking Dead came out with a pretty long trailer that is setting up the war with the Saviors and make sure to check out the end for a rad little hint at the future of the show.

The good news is that Westworld had something to show for season 2 and it looked awesome. The bad news is that we will be waiting until 2018 to see the show so for now enjoy a little glimpse of what's to come.

There were also a pair from the CW for the upcoming seasons of Arrow and The Flash. I am still behind (I know, I am letdown by myself too) so I haven't watched these but I can't let that keep them from you.

So yea there was a lot to see and while you check these out and get ready for your favorites to return we will keep you looking your best with all the best shirts for all your nerd needs. We have you covered with all the Defenders, Stranger Things, Walking Dead, Westworld, Arrow, Flash, and soo much more over at Shirtnado.com

While you're there check out our newest design for Preacher. All the joys of Ratwater Whiskey without worrying about the Saint of Killers chasing you down, what could be better?

Hellboy Movie Reboot?

The news just hit last night that we will be getting a new Hellboy movie (Rad!) but it won't be the third in the previous series or have Ron Perlman and Guillermo Del Toro (What!?). Mike Mignola the creator of Hellboy made a post on twitter that said this will be an R-rated movie directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbour who is most widely known for playing Hopper in the Netflix hit Stranger Things. This was a bit of a shock since pretty recently Del Toro himself came out and said the third Hellboy movie wasn't happening so we all sort of took that as Hellboy was done altogether. Now the rumor is this will be a reboot which is where they lose me a bit. It is the Spider-man effect for me. You have years of great stories to go to or in the event of Hellboy 2 you can do your own story but a reboot is showing us the same thing we already have. The rumored title is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen so that could be something new but it could also just mean changing the B plot while the majority of the movie is an origin tale.

I'm not ready to write this off as it seems like a good fit with the choice of actor and director but for me Perlman is to Hellboy what Kevin Conroy is to Batman. When I am reading a comic now those are the voices I instinctively hear in my head. Not to mention that the creatures and set design Del Toro adds fit perfectly with a universe like Hellboy's. This is just my gut reaction to the news but I wanted to see what others think. Do you think Hopper will make a good Hellboy and what do you think of it being a reboot? Let us know here, twitter, facebook, or just go yell it in the streets.

While we have some time before we hear some more about all this we can go back and check out Stranger Things season 1 and get ready for season 2. We have all your tee and Funko needs covered so check those out @shirtnado.net while you get ready for all that upside down fun!

Impressions of Netflix's Iron Fist

Hi my name is Dany and I am what you may call a pretty big Iron Fist fan. On instagram and twitter I am @thedanyrand (I went with the one "n" cause I saw an old Irish fighter with that and being mostly Irish I took it), I have his first appearance issue (Marvel Premiere #15),
and there may or may not be a tattoo of Shou Lao in the mix. So before I give my impressions on the Netflix version you know I am not only a fan but pretty familiar with the character. Iron Fist has been my favorite comic character for years and years so I was beyond pumped when I heard he was getting his own show. Now I wanted to give myself a bit of time to watch Iron Fist and not just pull the usual binge watching move and as I was watching I would see reviews pop up about how it is basically terrible. So real quick I wanted to run down my thoughts and see what you all have to say about it. Let it be said now I have finished the show and will be bouncing around it a but so this is your spoiler warning.

Firstly I want to touch on the big talking point from before it even aired. Should Iron Fist be Asian? As a recap let me just say Danny is not the first or only Iron Fist. Danny is the 66th and most of them have been Asian. That was something that I always liked about the character he was the outsider who won the title and became the protector of K'un Lun. So you can use an Asian Iron Fist but to fit with the other characters especially Luke Cage, Cage and Danny were known for years as the Heroes for Hire and are best friends in the books, they were best off using the Danny Rand that we see on the show.

Now to get to the show itself and how I think it breaks down. It seems like critics across the board hated it but a lot of fans liked it. For what it's worth I liked it too. It told a pretty good story that not only tied in a lot of Iron Fist lore but also made the most out of what has been established throughout the other Netflix series. Now that doesn't mean it is perfect or that I don't think it had problems. The biggest one for me is the fighting. There are a few good fights and I was stoked when Danny and Davos squared off for a bit but it was slow moving and you could tell Finn Jones wasn't a martial artist. As anyone who ever tried duplicating a move they saw JCVD do in Kickboxer (don't give me that look I know you did it too) knows martial arts are not easy. I read that Finn only got about 3 weeks of training in before schedules got crossed and he was training on set during filming. So I can see the fights not being their best and I hope that for the defenders he will be a bit more polished.

As far as the story went I liked that they didn't go overboard on trying to show too much of K'un Lun and especially Danny fighting Shou Lao. A guy fighting a dragon sounds rad but that is a tall order to pull off well in a movie much less a tv show. We got to see the heroin from the very first Daredevil season be worked into and followed up on here. As soon as I saw the Steel Serpent logo I knew we were looking at Crane Mother and have waited a long time to see that pay off and I think they did it really well. There were a few more nods to the comics as there always are but the other big stand out was seeing the Bride of Nine Spiders pop up and look so comic accurate.
The karaoke singer turned fighter also in that episode was a character called Scythe who was in Marvel Premiere #16. Not nearly as notable but a cool nod to the fans. The other standout moment was seeing Orson Randall who was the Iron Fist before Danny. He is the one you see in the old clip that Bakuto shows Danny in episode 10.

Now before I nerd out any harder I am going to stop myself and ask what you all thought.  What did you like? What did you hate? What do you hope to see in the recently announced Defenders show? One last thing- if you are interested in the character of Iron Fist and want to check out some of his comic work then what I think is one of if not his best run is the Immortal Iron Fist run from 2007. You can get them as trades pretty easily or download digitally. If you want to look like the kinda person who can go off for 15 years then come back to NY and take on an evil cult of ninja's then we have the shirt for you. Pick up your own Rand Enterprises tee
online at Shirtnado or come out this weekend and see us at the Steel City Con in Monroeville PA.

New Comic Day Pick - March 8

This week's pick is Old Man Logan #19. With the release of Logan this is a book that I think everyone should be reading. It follows an alternate future Logan now that he is in the main Marvel universe following the events of Secret Wars from 2015. The official description for this issue is the following..

PRISON BREAK WITH OLD MAN LOGAN! A failure from the past haunts LOGAN...and to correct his mistakes, he'll need magical assistance. But when he faces opposition, Logan will turn to an unlikely - and potentially treacherous - ally! Will an encounter with MILES MORALES convince Logan to alter his path?

Written by Jeff Lemire and art by Andrea Sorrentino this is a consistently rad book that puts a nice spin on Wolverine. What are you picking up this week and have you been keeping up with this run of Logan? What do you think of this version of old Wolvey?

New Comic Day Pick - March 1

This is the end. This is the series finale of Nailbiter so if you aren't caught up now is the time. The mystery of Buckaroo is revealed and I am willing to bet it's going to be bloody. This extra sized finale is written as always by Joshua Williamson with art by Mike Henderson.

New Comic Day Pick - Feb 22

The Visitor will be telling one of Hellboy's longest ongoing mysteries. When Hellboy came in 1944 there was a visitor who was also there sent to kill Hellboy. Who he is and why he didn't complete his task has never been told until now. This is number 1 of a limited 5 issue series written by Mike Mignola himself with art by Paul Grist.

Toy Fair NY 2017 Announcements

This weekend saw a ton of awesome new things announced in NY. I was looking around and didn't see any really good full coverage of the event so I went ahead and dug around to bring you some of my favorite things I saw.

Starting with Funko there were a few cool new sets they brought out and Westworld is one we are all stoked on.

These are still prototypes (that's why you see the wonky eyebrow colors) but they are looking just about ready to go and we will for sure have these up for sale as soon as they are released. Another one I'm sure we will have up is the Peter Parker wearing the Midtown shirt from the upcoming movie Spider-man: Homecoming.
Peter is rocking his Midtown look and so you are ready to do the same you can get your tee right here  . I am thinking this will be a good bundle idea like our Eleven Pop! and Beware the Demogorgon tee that we have up now at Shirtnado! so be on the look out for that this Spring!

Now DC had a few things that I liked, the new Batman Black and White statues are up there, but the coolest figure I saw was the TV version of John Constantine (R.I.P.) If you were a fan of the show this guy belongs on your shelf.

Marvel had a few figures I am stoked about but to keep it short I will just show 2. Honorary mention to the Nebula and Spider-Man Legends figures that looked amazing though. First up we have Moon Knight. If you aren't excited just based on that there isn't much I can do for you but this guy has needed a good 6 inch figure for a while and yea I would have loved the all white suit look in the current books but this will still do nicely.

The other I wanted to show is from the upcoming Netflix Legends line that will feature characters from all the Marvel Netflix shows. This Daredevil is one of the best sculpts I have seen in a long time and I can't wait to get online one night after a few beers and wake up the next day with a nice long set of pre orders.
Before I leave Marvel I have to show this bad boy off. Last year Marvel put out a pretty fairly priced set of replica items. They started off with Cap's shield and Iron Man's helmet. These both MSRP at around $100 but I picked up my Cap shield for about $75 so some hunting as always can help you save a few bucks. This years set will be Thor's hammer Mjolnir which lights up, responds to your voice, and has a nice little base. The one I am pumped on is Star Lord's helmet though. This bad boy is made for adult size heads (bout time) and lights up as well but also has built in bluetooth headphones. So later this summer when you come by the Shirtnado! booth and see a guy wearing our Ravagers tee and a Star Lord mask dancing around to Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love" stop by and say Hi I might even let you try it on.

Lastly there were a lot of Lego sets I could talk about and don't be shocked if they pop up in a later post once I have built a few but I have to put up the Scarif Stormtrooper. I love the design of these guys and was hoping this would be a set so I can't wait to get this guy on the shelf soon.

Alright that's a lot to digest and there is still a ton more. I'm going to link to some of the sites I was checking out to see what was announced so you can go down that rabbit hole yourself. Look for more coverage over at thefwoosh, gamespot,  toyark, and marveltoynews.

New Comic Day Pick - Feb 8

Danny and Luke are having some problems after the events of Civil War 2. In Power Man and Iron Fist #13 Jessica left with Danielle and Luke isn't taking it too well. Danny wants to help but he is dealing with his own problems. Written by David Walker with art by Sanford Greene.

New Comic Day Pick - Feb 1

This is it. The end of my favorite book is about to begin but first we have the conclusion of the Cory Walker drawn story line that has been going on the last few issues. If you haven't read Invincible just see the tag line on the top of the cover "The Best Comic in the Universe" and that isn't a joke it really is. This has been consistently one of the best books with a realistic spin on the superhero genre and all the tropes that come with it. I could talk about this book every day all day so I will just highly recommend it and say time to binge read and get ready for the "End of all Things". As always this is written by Robert Kirkman who you may know from the Walking Dead, This issue has the cover drawn by Ryan Ottley and interior art by Cory Walker and colors by Jean-Francois Beaulieu.

Looking ahead to Spider-Man: Homecoming

In case you didn't notice we are pretty into all the comic movies that we have had since Iron Man came out and showed that these characters can be put on the big screen and bring the masses in. While we are a few months away from a new one hitting I have been biding my time rewatching and rereading a good bit of Marvel stuff. Which all lead me to this - What do we think the next Spidey movie will be like? There have been 5 Spider-Man movies since 2002 and so far 2 different actors have played Peter Parker. Some have done it well (Spider-man 2) and some have not (Spider-man 3). The current Peter Parker is played by Tom Holland who has made his introduction already in Captain America : Civil War. I wasn't sure how Marvel was going to set him up as he is basically being re-introduced to the audiences this time living in the current MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) through Civil War. I was beyond happy that they skipped the origin story out right. At this point I think even kids who never heard of Spider-man just know that he was bit by a radioactive spider, kind of sort of let his uncle die, and then decided to become a hero to make up for it. The last thing Civil War needed was a long Spidey origin tale in the middle of it so instead we find him 6 months into the job. Since we have met Peter and seen what he can do what can we expect in his new movie Spider-Man: Homecoming?

From the details that have made it out things are looking pretty good. This movie seems to be centered on the high school Peter Parker. A lot of the actors announced seem to be cast as either students or teachers so looks like the school will be a major point throughout the story. I have been reading through the Ultimate run written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Mark Bagley until Stuart Immonen took over. If you never checked it out this was a retelling of old web head for a new audience. It focused mostly on the high school Peter and retold a lot of his famous story arcs taking place in a post 2000 setting. I could just be being hopeful because I loved this run but it looks like this new set of movies could draw heavily from the Bendis ultimate story. Focusing on establishing himself as Spider-Man while dealing with his everyday problems is what made the character so popular throughout the years and the ultimate line updated those stories for the new generation.

This movie is also giving some villains that haven't been seen on the big screen their time. The main villain looks to be the Vulture with some help from the Tinkerer and the Shocker. There is also a rumor that there could be a fourth bad guy thrown in as well. That seems like a lot to put into one movie but after seeing that the last few Cap movies have basically been Avengers-lite with good guys and bad all over the place Marvel seems to know how to give everyone enough time for them to make sense. Plus if it seems a bit one sided Iron Man can always pop in since he took up being a mentor to Peter in the MCU and maybe we will get the Iron Spider suit (if you don't know what that is go check out the Civil War story in the comics from 2006. Good guys fight each other, some don't make it, and our boy Spidey gets himself a fancy new suit).
We still have to wait until July 7th to see how this new Spider-man movie goes but you can keep the hype going by wearing a little Midtown High pride with our shirt here.
